What if I’m experiencing a mental health emergency right now?
If you are in imminent danger, we encourage students to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255; Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a Crisis Counselor; dial 911; or go to their nearest Emergency Room for the most immediate care. -
I’m not located in DC. Can I still meet one-on-one with a counselor?
Because of state licensing requirements, you must be physically located in DC to receive our full range of teletherapy services. However, we can meet with any CUA student by phone for a one-time consultation, no matter where you are located. Please call us at (202) 319-5765 to set up a phone consultation to review options, based on your location. -
What do I do if I want to resume regular therapy with my therapist?
Call the Front Desk to ask to be placed on their schedule. If you haven’t met with them for more than 90 days, you will need an Updated Intake. -

What if I would like a one-time, same-day, consultation?

What if I’m interested in group therapy?
Go to our Groups page for this semester’s offerings. Call the Front Desk (202-319-5765) and mention which group you are interested in joining. You will most likely need an Intake and/or pre-screen. -
What if I am thinking about starting medication?
- You will need to be in ongoing individual therapy here at the Counseling Center. Because of state licensing regulations, you will need to be physically located in Washington, DC, for any telehealth appointments with the psychiatric nurse practitioner. Your therapist will direct you on how to schedule an in-person or telehealth appointment with our psychiatric nurse practitioner.
- If you are only interested in medication, and not therapy at this time, call the Front Desk (202-319-5765) and schedule a one-time Consultation to receive referrals for off-campus psychiatric providers.
-
What if I don’t have a personal computer and webcam OR I am unable to find a private space for appointments?
We are able to conduct most appointments over the phone! Additionally, we have private offices within the Counseling Center available for your use. Call the Front Desk (202-319-5765) if you are physically in DC and require assistance. -
What if the Counseling Center is fully booked and is not taking new clients right now?
As stated above, the Counseling Center provides same-day appointments at 12 pm and 1 pm every day. Additionally, the university has implemented a new therapy app to help with the influx of students seeking mental health resources. This app is free to full-time students. For more information, go to our resources page.
Welcome to the Counseling Center at the Catholic University of America.
Our purpose is to help you make the most of yourself as a developing person-more comfortable and effective in your own life and in your relations with others. This could mean overcoming unwanted feelings and behaviors or enhancing what you are already doing well.
We provide confidential services to full-time and part-time CUA students. Our services include individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric consultation, walk-in consultations, walk-in emergency services for mental health crises, outreach, and referral services to outside agencies or practitioners.
The Counseling Center is accredited by IACS, the International Association of Counseling Services.
In case the university is closed (including early closings and delayed openings) due to inclement weather, the Counseling Center will be closed (or delayed) and appointments scheduled during the time we're closed or delayed will be considered to have been canceled. If this happens, please call to reschedule your appointment for another time.
To schedule an appointment, call 202-319-5765 or come to the Counseling Center, located in 127 O'Boyle Hall.
